Henry Coe State Park visit – part II

It’s the weekend, but school is in session! After breakfast, the Revamp the Camp team begins brainstorming design ideas, considering topics such as: different environments, cabin sizes, materials and typologies.

The team’s first meeting is with Mike Carr, the President/CEO of United Camps, Conferences and Retreats. He helps answer many of the team’s design questions and equips them with a ROI calculator. With the calculator, they are able to set up design scenarios to determine variables such as building and maintenance costs.

After a quick lunch, the team then meets with Mat Fuzie,  the Monterey District Superintendent of California State Parks. He provides the team with maps and site plans of Henry Coe as well as his immense knowledge of California State Parks.

The team is then introduced to Jen, a Henry Coe State Park Ranger who offers to guide the team through the rugged terrain of the Western Zone. Along with Mat Fuzie, Jen and the Revamp the Camp team pile into four trucks and head to the potential cabin sites located in the back country.

The group stopped at several camp sites along the trail and documented the surroundings. Different camp areas included open spaces of green grass, a variety of trees for shade, and a nearby river or creek.

The group had a great time exploring the back country and learned so much. The experience has truly given the team further insight towards their cabin designs. Thus, this concludes the Revamp the Camp site visit to Henry W. Coe State Park.

It’s time to head back home. But first, let’s take a groupie!
